Spring 2010

March is here and the staff in the Student Success Center has accomplished a lot already this year. National TRiO Day for the southern region of Illinois was hosted here at John A. Logan College on February 27, 2010. There were over 250 students and staff in attendance from six different colleges and/or universities at this event to help celebrate and reflect upon increased access to higher education for disadvantaged students. Federal TRiO programs help low-income and first generation students enter college and earn a college degree. JALC is funded to serve 200 students in the Student Support Services grant. Interested students should stop in to pick up an application when they are on campus to register.
JALC’s campus tutoring program is as busy as ever. Most of our tutors’ appointments are full as students finish midterms and prepare for “crunch time.” JALC currently employs approximately 17 tutors who assist students in over 50 different courses. Students can request a tutor at any point in the semester; however, applications for individual tutoring are accepted one week before the start of each semester. It is encouraged that students sign up early to avoid waiting lists.
Disability Support Services staff encourages new and returning students to sign up for services early to avoid any delays in obtaining approval for accommodations. New students needing accommodations for the ASSET or COMPASS test should make an appointment to see one of our DSS staff to determine if they qualify for reasonable accommodations, such as extended test time or a test reader. Current documentation is required in order for staff to make the determination for services. For those students who want to find out if they qualify for services for their courses only, now is the time to make an appointment as well. Advance planning is necessary in many situations to not only allow ample time for DSS staff to prepare, but also for the student who may need to obtain additional documentation.
And finally, the retention program is growing. Our retention counselor has been conducting college survival workshops, as well as seeing many at-risk students who may require financial and/or academic assistance in order to remain in school.
New students are encouraged to stop by the Student Success Center at any time to learn more about our valuable support services.

Fall 2009 Semester Begins!

The Student Success Center started the 2009-2010 academic year off with exciting activities during the first two weeks of the semester. On August 24th and 25th, we hosted our annual Open House to highlight support services: Disability Support Services, Tutoring, TRIO Student Support Services, and Retention Services. Many students and staff stopped by to learn about our programs, sign up for door prizes, and to enjoy refreshments. Presentations were also made to approximately six classes of students. Many students signed up for tutoring, and appointments were made for TRIO and DSS. It was an exciting, yet tiring, time for SSC staff.
On Monday, August 31, 2009, we hosted a motivational speaker. Jeff McGoy, a local talent, presented an inspiring and entertaining presentation called “Get Ready World: Here I Come!” Those in attendance gained valuable insights to equip them for staying motivated during the year ahead.
The math and biology help rooms opened for business on Wednesday August 26th with limited access, and with full access that began on Monday, August 31st. Individual tutoring also began on the 31st , in our newly remodeled tutor room. Many slots are full and some students are already on waiting lists.
TRIO is in the process of identifying and selecting participants for the upcoming year. Intakes are being conducted daily, and open slots are filling quickly. The selection process is going on through October 31, 2009.
The Staff in the SSC are all experiencing a very active semester for our programs. With the campus experiencing exceptionally high enrollment, the need for support services will be even more important. All students needing services are encouraged to stop by the center to take advantage of what we have to offer.

welcome back!

I can't believe it is already August! The fall semester will be starting in just a couple of weeks. I hope everyone has had an enjoyable summer and is rested up. We, in the Student Success Center, have had some exciting things happening. Over the summer our tutoring center was expanded and is now almost double in size. We also have additional computers for the students and their tutors to use for tutoring. We are currently looking into math and computer software to aid in the tutoring process. In addition, on August 31, 2009 the Student Success Center is hosting an area motivational speaker. All students and staff are invited to attend this special event. Look for the flyer on any of the bulletin boards on campus or call our office for more information at 618-985-3741. and finally...... TRIO is currently selecting participants for the 2009-1010 academic school, so if you are interested in finding out more, please stop by the office in room C219 and pickup an application.

We look forward to seeing and working with everyone this upcoming semester.

April 2009

Spring is finally here…..and we can all feel it. April is a very busy month for us. Not only are we registering our students for the summer and fall semesters, but we are also assisting our spring students with current classes and any other issues that arise. Disability Support Services staff have been attending IEP meetings and conducting workshops for potential students in various special education programs throughout our district. In addition, one of our professional tutors recently returned from the National Tutoring Association annual conference in Salt Lake City, UT, with new ideas for our future on-line tutor training program. Our educational workshops provided each semester are coming to a close, with one topic remaining. Finally, TRIO staff continue to mentor their students as the end of the semester approaches.

Spring 2009

The Student Success Center is booming! We are right in the middle of tutoring for many different general ed courses right now, as well as mentoring our TRIO participants and providing accommodations to our students with disabilities. Workshops are in full swing too. We will be winding down in a few weeks with this semester, but new student registration and visits will be starting very soon as well. Three staff and three students attended TRIO day at Rend Lake College on February 28, and we came away with the knowledge that we would be hosting the annual event next year. More to come with that later...!
